RITA RANCH

The story goes that the area that has now become the planned community of Rita Ranch was named for the actress Rita Hayworth by Howard Hughes who owned vast areas of the Tucson valley and who was in love with the red haired movie star of the 40’s and 50’s. True or not, Rita Ranch is a planned community in the southeast part of Tucson that began to be developed in the 1980’s.According to the Tucson MLS, Rita Ranch homes for sale are made up of 2, 3, 4 and occasional 5 bedroom homes. There are one and two story homes and each subdivision has its own rules in regard to such items as recreational vehicles. One of our dear friends, Jean and her husband, who were among the first to live in the area called it “the wilderness” as there were homes but nothing else. It took several years to have the shopping necessary for further growth. Today there are two major supermarkets and dozens of smaller stores, shops, restaurants, fast food, banks and drug stores, etc.Rita Ranch is in the Vail Unified School District. As the entire southeast area has grown so rapidly, it has been a challenge for the schools to keep up. The Vail schools are in high demand as the system is highly progressive in their educational techniques. The district has been featured on several national TV programs. Additionally it is under a modified year around program which has worked very well.Youth sports are very popular and there are often several games being played in Purple Heart Park. The community pool is also located in the park. One of Tucson’s very few skateboard parks is here as well. And, Tucson itself is less than 10 miles away.It was Rita Ranch that brought attention to the otherwise ignored southeast part of Tucson thus advancing the areas of Corona de Tucson and Vail.
